Ran King of Mountain Course in 37.07 return. Only got 15 minutes to cut off to be competitive. Yay! At least I have 8 months of training. Beautiful day although at 27 degrees sweated bucket loads. Left camera at home although recorded run on runtastic on mobile.
Mount Cooroy (Sunshine Coast) |
9 Dec, 2013 |
Hard |

I went and asked for permission from Cooroy Mountain Water before I set off. The manager was very reasonable and even gave me a free chilled bottle of Cooroy Mountain Water. I parked just above the factory and set off towards the cliff face of an old quarry? After skirting the cliffs to the left I found a faint trail that had no flags or markings but was more obvious than the surrounding bush. Eventually I came out on a rocky outcrop facing west which gave some great views over the sunny coast hinterland. The summit was reached a little bit further up. A plaque set in the rock by the Cooroy scouts indicates the site of a log book. Beyond this the track drops slightly to another rocky outcrop facing east with magnificent views over Noosa.

Probably the easiest peak on the Sunny Coast but with magnificent views. Third peak for the day.
Emu Mountain (Mt. Peregian) (Sunshine Coast) |

This is also known as Emu mountain. An easy walk/run to the summit but great views 360 degrees with Mt Coolum dominating the view to the south.
Mount Coolum (Sunshine Coast) |

Medium |
2.6km return 90 mins |

Since I last climbed this there has been extensive work done on the track by stone masons. This has created an intricately created stone track with plenty of stone seats. This mountain is used extensively by fitness fanatics who like to jog up and down often carrying weights or tires. Great views at summit.
Mt Ninderry (Sunshine Coast) |
9 Dec, 2013 |
Medium |
3.3km return 90 mins |
|
Tried to summit Mt Ninderry from Barcrest Rd but found hill overgrown with tall cane like grass. Took me over an hour to reach base of cliffs. Skirted base and decided to follow track to right and back down to another road and followed road back to car. Ended up walking over 8km and did not make it to the summit this time. Next time I will follow directions on Aussie Bushwalking site.
Mt Miketeebumulgrai (Glass House Mountains National Park) |
2 Dec, 2013 |
Medium |
1.2km return 75 mins |
|
Parked car at sign on South side and followed a faint goat track to the base of the mountain. A short distance up I came across a large scar in the side of the hill. I chose a path to the right and then swung back to the left after clearing the scar. About this time I came across pink ribbons in the trees which helped me pick the best path to the summit and return. Although well treed there was some views north to the rest of the glasshouses. A rock cairn marks the summit. Up and back in around 40 minutes.
Mt Tunbubudla East (Glass House Mountains National Park) |
2 Dec, 2013 |
Hard |
4.9km return 3.5 hrs |
|
Upon reaching saddle between east and west I branched to the right and followed a faint pad marked intermittently by orange ribbon around trees. Quite steep and very loose underfoot. Upon reaching summit was disappointed with the lack of views due to the heavy foliage. Western summit has much better views. There is a rock cairn at the summit.
Mount Beerburrum (Glass House Mountains National Park) |
2 Dec, 2013 |
Medium |
3.5km return 90 mins |

After completing Mt Mike & The Twins in the morning Beerburrum was a nice change of pace. Although steep, the paved path was straightforward and the view from the fire tower was impressive.
Wild Horse Mountain (Glass House Mountains National Park) |
2 Dec, 2013 |
Medium |
1.4km return 30 mins |
|
Although definitely the easiest of the glasshouse peaks to climb this mountain provides the best view of the glass house mountains (in my opinion). And I have climbed every peak except Mt Coochin over the years including crook neck before climbing was banned in the 90's. This is my second trip up Wild Horse and a fitting end to my day. 5 glasshouse peaks conquered between dropping the kids off at school and getting back to pick them up. Mount Miketeebumulgrai, 199 m; Mount Tunbubudla or the Twins, 312 and 293 m; Mount Beerburrum, 276 m; & Wild Horse Mountain, 123 m.
Mt Tunbubudla West (Glass House Mountains National Park) |
2 Dec, 2013 |
Hard |
4.7km return 3.5 hrs |
|
After returning from the east summit I crossed the saddle and followed a well trodden path up the west summit. Upon reaching the cliff wall I followed the more obvious path up around the left and back onto the ridgeline. About half way up I came across some orange marker tape and followed these to the summit. Views are much better than the eastern summit even though it is not as high. Headed back down via the north side of the cliff as this was where the orange ribbon directed me. Track not as obvious and much more slippery than the ascent route. Trip from car to both summits and return done in 1hr 46 minutes with a fair amount of jogging to the base and back involved.
Mount Tibrogargan Summit (Glass House Mountains National Park) |
25 Nov, 2013 |
Very Hard |
2.7km return 2 hrs |
|
Have done this walk a couple of times previously. Quite a rock scramble. This time I did it for training for the Pomona King of The Mountain 2014 to establish a base level before I start my serious 8 month training. 19 minutes and 45 seconds from carpark to summit. 24 minutes to east face. 45 minutes return. Legs are still full of lactic acid 4 days later. On trip down I passed a father and daughter scrambling up. She would have been all of six years of age. Not sure I would take my kids up this mountain. |

Did this walk after Mt Tibrogargan. Left Mt Tibrogargan carpark and jogged to the circuit carpark. Continued along walking track to 4WD track. Turned right and followed 4WD track until a junction with a 4WD track on right. Took this track. Quite steep. 4WD track suddenly stops at top of steep section with no obvious turnaround point for 4WD's. Guess they have to reverse back down. Followed goat track from there, quite overgrown and hard to discern. Met up with more obvious track on ridgeline and followed ridge to summit. Great views of Tibrogargan, Beerwah and Coonowrin. On return journey followed more obvious track all the way down to 4wD track, turned left and retraced my route to walking circuit walk where I continued on circuit to Jack Ferris lookout and back around to the base of Tibrogargan and back to carpark. A walk less trodden and a different outlook on the glasshouses well worth doing.

Surprisingly interesting, this circuit is not difficult. The caves are quite unusual and not at all what I expected.

As Ships Stern was closed due to storm damage we chose this walk instead. Although the track notes state that this is the most botanically diverse walk in the park I was not expecting such a difference throughout the walk. A very interesting walk with great views.

I have done this walk a couple of times. Great view of Glass House Mountains, particularly Coonowrin and Beerwah. Good walk to take the family on as not overly challenging and no really exposed sections (unless you want them at the summit).

This walk was so unexpected. A gem tucked away in suburbia. |
