A little overnighter. The Mount Allen Fire Tower was open but there's heaps of moths and flies up there. Saw a few snakes at the Summer Falls. Such a peaceful hike. Only saw two other groups of hikers. |

Day one I started early and did all of the side tracks up to Big Bend... Moss Garden, Ampitheatre, Art Gallery, Cathedral (Wards Canyon was closed). Big Bend was all booked out so I pushed on towards Gadds. The hike up the Battleship Spur was really tough with my big 20kg backpack (I had a few moments where I had to stop and compose myself) and I was really tired but still had about 12 km to go. The hike into Gadds I got lost once. It's really important to follow the orange arrow markers but often you have your head down watching your step! I just got to Gadds in time to set up camp before sundown and I was spent so a quick feed and off to sleep. There was noone else there. Day 2 I was a little slow to get away and there was some big uphill climbs again but I got into West Branch at about 2.30pm and hung my clothes out to dry. This is actually a proper campground that is accessible by car and there were a few groups there. The night was freezing. I don't know the exact temperature but I woke up about 2am shivering and there was frost on everything in the morning, the taps weren't working because they were frozen and the water left over in the pot I boiled for my coffee eventually froze solid. Cold. I was sore and tired but got going to Consuelo and made good time so I kept going all the way to Cabbage Tree which is about 32km. The path from Consuelo to CT was poorly marked with the orange arrows at times... they go off into the bush weirdly but if you just stick to the main path you get to CT. The final day is mostly downhill with some epic views along the way. Pretty happy to make it back and my feet needed a rest! A great walk but nowhere to swim in order to clean yourself so after 4 days I was pretty dirty! To see a video of the hike on Youtube here's the link... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUxzKvYGn1Y |

One of the Glass House Mountain's less walked peaks from what I could tell... It has a small obscure car park off someone's driveway... The walk itself is similar distance and intensity to Ngungun or Coolum but it's more natural in that there's no man-made steps. The two peaks are another cool element for this hike. We did it on a Saturday mid-morning on a fine and sunny day and only saw 3 other people on the mountain. Great views from the top! |

We started at O'Reilly's and took a few detours off the Border Track. First of all we took the Toolona Circuit which added about 5km and then we took the Coomera circuit which added an extra 2.5. The Border Track is a lot more stable and has more ridge line lookouts but there is no waterfalls. The Toolona and Coomera detours are tougher on the body with the creek crossings and the undulating rocky tracks so it was harder on the body and we were pretty tired getting not Binna Burra. Day two there is a big downhill which is hard on the knees. It's also not well signed so you need to do your homework. A few times we took wrong tracks and had to back-track... same on day 3. We got into Woonoongoora Walkers Camp and it was pretty unappealling... no water to fill our flasks or cook with. A bit of rain was forecast so we pushed on and took on the final 10km up the stairs... The stairs are long but not as hard as I thought they would be. The track from the fire trail up the top of the 900 stairs to Purling Brook Falls was not signed well either and we had to search for the track a few times. I actually think it was closed because it was hard to cross with big white bags machinery on it but we pushed through... The hardest part of the walk was the final ascent up from the bottom of the Falls to the top... it's steep and we were cooked! In the end we did about 31km on day one and about 30km on day two with a couple of significant up hill grinds. I would have prefered to do it in 3 days but the Walkers Camp wasn't very good... |

It was dry and most of the waterfalls were not running. Kondalilla, Gheerulla, Mapleton Falls were all trickles at best but Baxter Falls was the highlight and a great refresh. We started from Gheerulla and walked up the switchbacks which was the hardest part of the walk. The Bluffs and walk along the ridge to Ubajee was pretty epic. We did the walk in three days which is fine. Pretty weary of a night but not too bad. We made a video of the walk which is on Youtube listed as "Sunshine Hinterland Great Walk Aug 2023" posted by "Motion Riot" | ||||

This is great hike. You can park your car and you return to it going in a circuit which is rare for such a long walk. There is plenty of water with the streams and waterfalls which is important for a long walk so you can clean yourself in the cold water and refresh the legs! We skipped passed Wongai walkers camp and went all the way to Tallowood in one day which was a long uphill grind at times. We were in bed by 6.30pm that night but the rest of the hike was much easier. A highlight was camping at Summer Falls. I recommend to bring plenty of bushman's spray or cream and apply to legs and socks and boots so the leaches leave you alone. |
