Highfields Falls Walking Trails

Toowoomba

A small network of well-maintained walking tracks through eucalypt forest, accessed from three trailheads. Highlights include a small waterfall (accessible the top and the base) and a shady gully where stepping-stones lead across a creek crossing. Excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Each of the circuits has its own difficulty rating, ranging from Grade 2/Easy -Grade 4/Hard (includes some steep sections, natural stone stairs + slip hazards). In general, these walks are appealing to walkers of all ages, and most fitness levels.

Getting there:

From Toowoomba, travel north on the New England Highway towards Highfields. Turn right onto Recreation Reserve Rd, then right onto James Byrne Rd. The carpark at the James Byrne trailhead is about half-way along the road on your left. The other trailheads are on Barber Rd (short gravel road, carpark suitable for long vehicles) and Kleve Rd (closest access to the Falls, but no formal carpark - park on the verge).

Route/Trail notes:

Walkers can create their own adventure from the following trails/loops...

  • Golden Whistler Walking Circuit (710m loop/10mins). Use Barber Rd trailhead. Gentle incline.

  • Kingfisher Walking Circuit (900m loop/15mins). Use James Byrne trailhead. One moderately steep section.

  • Rosella Walking Circuit (545m loop/10mins). Use James Byrne trailhead. One moderately steep section.

  • Lorikeet Walking Circuit (585m loop/10mins). Use Kleve Rd trailhead. Steep sections with loose surface when dry.

  • Yellow Robin Walking Circuit (650m loop/17mins). Use Kleve Rd trailhead. Steep section down to creek crossing. Incline can be very slippery when wet, and creek may be impassable due to flooding after heavy rain.

Side tracks off Yellow Robin Walking Circuit...

  • Cuckoo-dove Walk (160m one way/5mins). Top of falls. Steep and slippery when wet. Use caution near cliff edge.

  • Bowerbird Walk (?/10mins). Base of falls. Many natural stone steps. Slippery when wet. Do not attempt the short scramble to base of falls in wet conditions - very slippery and serious fall hazard.

Comments

Pitty a crew of young teens had set up thier hooka pipes halfway up the falls. Fair bit of overgrown grass and lantana too. Nice level tracks in most parts.

Visited just after heavy rain to see the creek & falls in full flow. Some damage to the path at the top of the falls (has been repaired since). Nice to see the new tree plantings along the steep bank near the creek crossing on Yellow Robin Walk. Some tree branches have been removed from the base of the falls, giving a better view of the waterfall from the end of Bowerbird Walk.

Lovely little walk down to the falls. I didn’t expect it to be flowing given there hasn’t been any significant rain for months but definitely a flow happening.

Very enjoyable walk on an overcast day. Green and cool. Signs a bit confusing but I just kept going for 45 minutes.

There are a number of walks in this area. There isn't meant to be a path from the top to the bottoms of the falls but lots of people have gone off path and created a goat track which then leads to other tracks (maybe animal tracks or more wandering people). The Bowerbird walk is meant to get you to the bottom of the falls and and the Cuckoo-Dove walk takes you to the top. The main tracks are very well maintained, but occasionally the signage is confusing.

Lots of small circuits, all easy walking, pebbled paths. Pretty after some rain has greened it up and there's a little bit of water on the falls.

OH MY GOODNESS - WOW! Aussie bush at its best! An easy trail with wide paths! I found the signage a bit confusing (there were multiple little circuits) but it was all one big circuit so I knew I'd eventually get back to my car. TOTALLY WORTH DOING!

Did the walk today very easy .. it’s open eucalyptus forest. Very dry at the moment but the creek was still flowing and small water fall present
