The highest of the Glasshouse Mountains, the Mt Beerwah summit walk is slightly easier than Mt Tibrogargan but still quite challenging. It has extensive views of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and Glasshouse Mountains.

Lookouts
Scrambling or Climbing
No Dogs Permitted

Getting there:

Travel via Glass House Mountains township, left into Bruce Paradede, left to Coonowrin Road and left onto Old Gympie Rd then right onto Mt Beerwah Road to the picnic ground.

Route/Trail notes:

Follow the walking track from the car park to the base of the mountain. This section is quite exposed and some rock scrambling experience is essential. Do not attempt if the rock is wet or rain is expected. Scramble up to the base of the cliffline. Turn right and follow the cliffline around and follow an obvious track around and up to the summit. Return via same route.

Indigenous History

Aboriginal people do not climb these mountains out of spiritual respect to Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples. They ask that visitors refrain from climbing them for the same reason.

According to Jinibara people’s lore and custom, Beerwah is the ancestral, pregnant mother. As there is nothing more important than a mother giving birth, Jinibara people are taught to respect and protect Mount Beerwah—a deeply spiritual place. Their lore and custom teach them not to climb this mountain out of respect for its great sacredness. Tibrogargan is seen as the father with Ngungun, his faithful dingo, lying at his feet. The mountains around them are their children.

So this mountain. What can I say. WOW.
It got me mentally, I was drained, I found it challenging on all levels.
1 because i was stupid and hit the gym the day before; 2 because I can't reach some of the holds.

I done this barefoot with others, it was slightly slippery to and i would not advise anyone to do this whom is scared of heights or faint hearted. However myself, being rather brave, this had me at moments where I felt anxiety and knew I needed to draw some focus and preserver.

It is doable, but challenging. I am by no means short, but I did need assistance for some pull ups in sections where my body was just not able to generate enough force or pull and the only way is up!

The bat cave area where the rock formations are an awesome sight, but the initial rock scramble/Climb is certainly confronting and challenged one of the guys as he took 40mins to get past one section.

I found myself scrambling laterally from point to point at a time where i tried to find some better grips, but still struggled with some reaches.

This hike is best attempted on dry days, wearing gloves and also I done it shoeless as i could not get my feet positioned correctly with shoes on.

If you get momentum going I'm sure you can climb up like a goat as I saw one of the boys, but mentally this mountain was tolling for me.

I personally am in no hurry to get back to it until i have some confidence in proper rock climbing but i will give it a crack later in the year once more.

All i can say when i look at it and thought about it is... WTF was i thinking.
I am yet to to Tibro, but after doing Beerwah I feel anything is possible, since then Mt. Barney was a easier for me.

But mentally Beerwah got me something good. I will be back BEERWAH!

Went with the QUThiking group. Nice hike just outside of Brisbane.

Lots of people climbing today. I would debate that Beerwah is harder than Tibrogargan, purely on length wise. Clear to see that this climb would be near impossible and quite silly to do in the wet or even if there is a chance of rain.

When you get to the cliff base turn left and follow the cliff line until you come across a marking pointing towards 'The Herd' cave entrance. Super tight squeeze even for small people. After a 5-10 metres of crawling you enter a small chamber where the possibility of being hit by bats is real.

Not really a walk, more of a climb, just follow the path of the water to the top. Up and down in 2 hours or so.

Definitely take 2L of water per person, and fruit to snack on. Took us 4 hours, but could have been done in 3, (if I didn't chicken out and go up and down the same 10m for 45 minutes while trying to decide if I could do it or not). Great 360 views from the top!

Summit Trail was reopened to the public and had to head up. such a beautiful view from the top.

Descended via this route after ascending the East Face… sooo much faster in comparison. A lot of fun but it wasn't hard to tell why the walk was closed. If you run your fingers along the cliffs the rock just falls away.

I found this climb much more challenging than Mt Tibrogargan as it is much longer. The hike starts with a short and easy trek through bush land, after that the rock scrambling begins. The initial rock face starts out very steep but inclines more on an angle as you ascend up. About halfway up are some interesting rock formations and bat caves to check out. Some bushbashing required in overgrown sections of the track but the rest of the ascent is more of hike up than a rock scramble. 360 degree views of all the glasshouse mountains at the top make the hike up well worthwhile. Took us 4 hours in total but we took it slowly, spent a lot of time at the top and exploring through caves.

fantastic walk, very hard climb up but worth it. Take care. Amazing rock formations half way up.

Good fun. I did this walk in the dark to make the sunrise. Saw a lot more on the way down in daylight than I did on the way up in the dark. Hopefully QPWS will reopen this walk at some point in the not too distant future.
