Mount Tibrogargan Summit

Glass House Mountains National Park

Almost a free climb instead of a hike.

It’s quite tricky to actually find it. Come off the Steve Irwin way at Matthew something park and drive around the back and through a tight railway tunnel then off to the right. You’ll pass some farming sheds on your right and the track to the car park is on your left.

According to Jinibara people’s lore and custom, Beerwah is the ancestral, pregnant mother. Tibrogargan is seen as the father with Ngungun, his faithful dingo, lying at his feet. The mountains around them are their children. Coonowrin is the eldest. The others are Beerburrum, Coochin, Elimbah, Tibberoowuccum, Miketeebumulgrai, Tunbubudla and, the youngest is currently known as Wild Horse Mountain.

Aboriginal people do not climb these mountains out of spiritual respect to Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples. They ask that visitors refrain from climbing them for the same reason.

Route/Trail notes:

Start on the Tibrogargan circuit walk and eventually you'll get to a sign pointing to the summit. It goes up pretty steeply until you get to the base of a cliff. From this point follow obvious wear marks to scramble up and up and up. Eventually it levels off with more bush and you're at the 364 metre summit!

Wicked view at the top. This was my first time up Mt Tibro and I raced up and down before the rain hit. I have been back since on a nice sunny day and took the view in more - one of my favourites in SE QLD

I would like to confirm that Mt Tibrogargan is open again, i climbed / hiked up it this morning, the fire that went through the place burnt right to the top, the track has been cleaned up and most of the loose rocks have been removed.

Fantastic walk, small cave if you climb to the top and down the other side a bit. I've got average climbing fitness and did not consider this 'difficult' as it took 18 minutes to reach the top peak from the first rock scramble (after the actual bush walk). The way down was a crab walk not much slower than the ascent (we spent a long time at the top looking around). Legs started to shake back in the car park though. Not 'technically' difficult but a good workout at a fast pace!

Have done this walk a couple of times previously. Quite a rock scramble. This time I did it for training for the Pomona King of The Mountain 2014 to establish a base level before I start my serious 8 month training. 19 minutes and 45 seconds from carpark to summit. 24 minutes to east face. 45 minutes return. Legs are still full of lactic acid 4 days later.
On trip down I passed a father and daughter scrambling up. She would have been all of six years of age. Not sure I would take my kids up this mountain.

Great walk / hike. Some steep parts and not suited for everybody but worth the hike when you get on top.

Was a fantastic challenge! Glad to have had some in our group who'd climbed it several times to give us a helping hand and guidance up some difficult parts!
Overall the view was definitely worth the hike!
Going again tomorrow!

A bit exposed for me, but good fun in the end!

Great walk (more of a steep scramble/climb). Well worth it. Bring grippy shoes.

Pazuzu on 16 Jun, 2013

didnt make the whole summit due to the rain.

Samiekins on 16 May, 2013

This is a really fun thing to do, not a climb not a walk more of a scramble like the stuff you did when you was a kid. Easy to acomplish well worth the efort.

What a great time getting terrified for fun. Love this challenge.

Great walk. With a nice little climb to the top. Need to be careful if people are above you and dislodge a rock as they come crashing down on top of you.

Nice walk/climb though.

A great climb. I use it regularly for excercise and did it twice for some training for Mount warning. Make it an early start and you will almost have the mountain to yourself. A good steady walk up from the car park to the rock base to get the heart rate up then the climb up the rest of the way with some great views of Beerwah and Coonowrin on the way up. 1

A great walk up. A worry with the number of peole crowding on the way down.

Laurence Hallam on 22 Sep, 2011

If you do it in the afternoon, walk over to the east face and watch the shadow of Tibrogargan creep to the east. Pyscologically intimidating but worth the effort

Alan Barrie on 17 Sep, 2011

Lets say if you can climb the steep beginning then you can climb the rest.

Quick walk and scramble, awesome views, after doing Mt Barney 2 days earlier was a walk in the park...still need some sought of scrambling skills, be relatively fit and not be scared of heights...im sure this is a different route to what i did in 2005

A warm morning to climb! Sunrise was very pretty.

Laurence Hallam on 1 Aug, 2010

Was very busy on Saturday morning. We kept getting overlapped by little kids who just fly up the wall

Done often, first time was 2008. Lots of traffic easy route finding, nice view at the top
