A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

QTopo: FLINDERS PEAK 9442-24 (1:25,000)

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

One of my favorite local hikes. A great cardio and leg workout at the base, followed by nice ridge trails and some easy rock hopping here and there. Only one straightforward and small climbing section near the top that an elderly woman with an ankle injury completed on one hike up.
No scary dropoffs or death-defying cliffs here. Just a great view at the top.

What can I say frist big hike ever did it in 3hrs 30mins lots of people out to chat to and was great, very step in some areas but while marked bloody good views and worth the push to keep going to the top, I will do it again it was very challanging but my fitness level was amazing very happy with myself to do this hike.

good tough walk, easy to navigate, great views. Made it up in 1h30m down in 1hr.

Our group of 10 all different ages and level of fitness completed this hike in 4 hours. The ascent was a great challenge for some, yes there were some heart beat raising moments however we all agreed the this hike rating should be medium/hard. Flinders Peak ticks all the boxes for rock scrambling, navigation, fantastic views (yes! you need to stop and turn around) 360 deg views up top. The picnic area is a great place to have a lunch (we all took a snack for up top). A great day out and only 1 hour out of Brisbane.

Quite challenging as it's a constant climb. We are relatively fit, though took our time getting up including a few water breaks and got up to the peak in 90mins.

Great walk with a awesome view.

Great walk. It took us 1 hour 50 minutes to reach the summit. We met a lass who powered up the peak in an hour extreme hiker! My companion Gus was shattered and declared this walk to be the hardest we have done so far. Others so far have been Mt Maroon, Mt Edwards, Mt Greville, Mt Mathieson and Somerset trail walk. I think he's a bit soft but anyway, can't choose your friends...no hang on, can't choose your family...oh well, choice is always something to consider.

Good GO TO hike if you haven’t been out for awhile, nice mix of everything.

Great hike, was perfect weather for this hike today with a top of 23 degrees. Got up in 55 mins from the Picnic area, took a similar time to get down as stopped for photos and the view which is amazing. I feel that the decent is tougher especially if you are older, on the knees.
The track is easy to follow and they have these new orange arrows which keep you on the right track. The views from the top is stunning. Was quite busy this morning with a number of groups on the trail.
Take plenty of water as there is no water on the way or at the summit. You can refill you water bottles at the Picnic area from the rainwater tank.

Great morning loved the hike. Scrambled over rocks climbed a chimney and had the best views of Brisbane.

G'day all, Brendo & Loz here for another Brendo & Loz mountain review. This time we're climbing Flinder's Peak, just outside the charming, yet uninspiring, town of Ipswich, Australia.

-Nice climb, with picturesque rocky saddles that have good views of Ippy and Bris up until the summit.
-Lots of pretty flowers and hairy grubs having groupsex on the way up- quite lovely.
-Scrambling was easy going, our underpants were -free post climb.
-Final summit has a great view, and there's a nice rocky outcrop past the solar panels to chill out.
-Descent was slow going. Gotta take your time to make sure you don't slide down the dirt trail (not fun).
-Brendo & I shared a Sapporo beer at the summit and took in the view.

Sapporo is a beer from the north island of Japan, that is brewed under licence in Australia by Coopers in North Adelaide. It has a nutty taste but goes down smoothly. Having had my fair share of Sapporo in Sapporo, I can tell you that Coopers do a good job recreating the beer here. Cases tend to retail at $48-52. We give the mountain a 7 and the beer an 8.

I made the mistake of doing this hike during summer! The walk was sometimes challenging and there is lots of rock scrambling and climbing up scree slopes, which was hot and sweaty work. The views at the top were very rewarding. All of the scenic rim, Main range NP and the Moogerah peaks can be viewed from the top. There is a helipad and a signal station at the top of the mountain. Way back down was quicker. It took me approx 3 hours return to complete.

Bring lots of water!!!!!!

Nice climb with cardio and some basic scrambling! Not sure i would rate it 'very hard' and the track was quite clearly marked but was nice to cross this one off as it isn't too far from Brisbane. Quite dusty which made it was slippery on the way down.

Sarah on 15 Apr, 2017

Awesome views! Tracks are good but still feels like your "off the betten track" and out in the bush.

DanF on 18 Mar, 2017

Hard walk on a hot day. Great views at the top.Bit hard on the toes on the way down.

ian parker on 12 Mar, 2017

A good challenging trail in parts. Easy to navigate and awesome view all along the way. Took about two and a half hours up and back and was about 6.5km

Grant on 21 Jan, 2017

This hike was quite enjoyable besides the storching heat, however this is definitely not the time of year to head out rock climbing. The entire way up had beautiful lookouts on either side of the ridge and kept on getting better the higher you got. Definitely worth the hike however ensure you take plenty of water and take frequent breaks

Matt on 11 Jan, 2017

Another hike of Flinder's today. Quite enjoyable but the view at the top of Maroon is nicer IMO. It was really hot so if you're hiking in summer take heaps of water.
