Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Did this walk on an eerie cloudy morning for pack training last year. Hiked up through the clouds to the summit, very beautiful climb!

We loved this walk. Got up early morning and was freezing cold but very worth it. Track was easy to navigate however there was a fair bit of debris over it after recent storms. Amazing views the whole way up. We made a little video about our adventure to Mt Mitchell, feel free to click the link below to give it a watch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTaxUQ7yXl8

Great walk. 10.2km. Dragged the 3 youngens along. They enjoyed it. 1h30 up & 1h10 down. We did have a close encounter with a kangawallabaroobat.

Great clear maintained track and relatively easy walk with a variety of different zones from rainforest to dry rocky outcrop at top. The view from the top is amazing, but unfortunately a bit hazy on this day. I reached the top at about 9:30, but think an early morning start in the dark to get up the top for the sunrise would be well worth doing.

Saw a good variety of birdlife and a big goanna.

This track is beautiful as always, with unparalleled views from the summit. Since my last visit quite a few stinging nettles have sprung up along the track toward the summit, take care. Also saw an echidna.

Beautiful walk with a gorgeous view from the summit.
Almost tread on a snake, so keep your eyes to the trail ;)

I think this was the 2nd time i went. Very easy. Nice walk. Great views.

Amazing views and the climb is not too difficult. Watch out for leeches (we got two each) and stinging nettle (urtica dioica), they really hurt! Highly recommend wearing long pants for this walk.

Amazing walk, loved the rainforest sections. Fantastic views from the top. The enclosed area at the summit cairn was a tranquil and beautiful spot to chill out on a hot day. Worth every step. Saw some large lizards, small snakes and lots of birds busily preparing their nests.

Beautiful rain forest hike! Easy to moderate. Less than 3 hours up and back

Easy hike but long and the views are amazing! So high up! If you're not ready for the harder mountains but want the height and views this one is for you.

A nice walk up along a well-defined track. A couple of lots of stairs right at the top that get your heart pumping a bit if you're unfit like me, but nothing terrible. ;) The views are seriously awesome, and the day was beautiful so there were clear blue skies and no wind. We spent a good half hour on the top just looking around at everything and watching some birds fly around us.

Quite an easy climb to the peak, and very worth it! Plan to go back shortly!

Cold and windy. 1:15 up and 45 min down. Massive view on top

Great walk up with the kids (10 and 8). Cold and very windy but we had a hot drink at the top and admired the fantastic views.

ShavenWalrus on 13 Jul, 2015

Fantastic walk with the children (13, 11, 9 and 7)! Up in 90 mins and back down in 60 mins. Gorgeous (albeit small) area at top to picnic and make a cup of tea. Beautiful afternoon. Parking was limited - I have never seen this carpark full before, but we were fortunate to pull in as someone was pulling out. As always crossing the highway to the start of the walk fills me with trepidation particularly with children.

Amazing bang for your buck in terms of effort to view ratio! This is an easy walk that is very clearly signed. The view from the top is excellent on a clear day!

Majestic, other-worldly, beautiful walk with magnificent views. I am NOT fit and climbing the rock stairs was difficult for me but it was absolutely worth sticking it out. A great walk to do in winter, as the shade to sunshine ratio is just so that it's not cold and you get to bask in the sun while you eat lunch at the peak. Just wear long pants and watch out for SNAKES sunbathing on the path at noon! I was almost bitten by a RED BELLY BLACK SNAKE! Such a close call, although the Adrenalin kick was just what I needed. A must-do walk!
