Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Such a beautiful walk. Stunning rainforest and bush, with some ancient 30+ meter gum trees and hoop pines along the way. Plenty of tiny streams and beautiful look out spots. Near the top, there are a fair few stairs, that are unfortunately close to a lot of wait-a-while vines. Got caught a few times, but it wasn't too bad. Views from the summit are incredible. Had a nice little picnic on the flat rocks in the sun at the top, plenty of tiny birds and lizards. No leeches, bugs or other annoyances to be seen.

Took 3 hrs up and 3 hrs back. But it was worth it for the view! Simply spectacular. The walk was very easy but long. It's a bit unnerving sitting in at the end as is not very wide, but it was a great experience. Spent an hour at the top.

I hate hills... but this was well worth the effort. I imagine if I wasn't fat I'd have gotten up it faster, but my family did the round trip including a little time up the top in about 4 hours. Wish we'd bought a picnic but I'd not have wanted to lug it up. My 6 & 8 year old daughters loved it!
Million dollar views rewards even the most unfit dawdlers,as long as they keep plugging along. The stairs are a bit scary if it's blowing a hassle as they are close to the edge at times.
Looking forward to tackling another walk soon!

Very easy walk if you've done any other mountains. Very enjoyable and highly recommended. The views at the top are amazing and if you're scared of heights it's a good adrenalin rush. Took us 1 hour and 10 to get up and less to get back. Seen a snake, unsure what kind , had one leech and hit a fair bit of stinging nettle which is pretty hard to avoid near the top.

A pretty easy walk up a fairly high mountain. At no point did I have to climb or scramble. It's just a steady hike the whole way. You get spectacular views from the top looking all over the Scenic Rim.

Great walk with amazing views. Particularly windy at the top. Did this after the Cyclone Marcia few days of rain. Leeches galore! You couldn't stop walking as the ground was literally moving with them, eep! 80% DEET works wonders though :)

Great walk and it wasn't at all strenuous. Despite the clouds you could tell the views would be fantastic - need to do it again on a clear day. Plenty of leeches and stinging nettles

Nice hike. It is a nice area to have a break from driving when travelling back to Brisbane.

Not too hard a walk with views in all directions. Grass trees on the summit were flowering for an added bonus

We did the walk in 2.5 hours (excluding the 1 hour we spent at the top). The view at the top are amazing and well worth it. Beware of ticks!

Amazing view from the top, well worth the walk

Definitely not a climb, but a steady walk. Went just after dawn and it was still damp (and muddy). Path is clear and easy to follow. Watch out for leeches though!

Strpylprd on 1 Jun, 2014

Great walk- went in the morning and it wasn't too hot. Saw a carpet python sunning itself on the path! No leeches. Great views!

Anybody with general fitness levels wanting to take some incredible photo's should seriously consider Mt Mitchell. We generally attack serious rock scramble mountain climbs .. this is certainly not that at all, but it'll give you all the incredible views anyway.

This is not a hard walk .. very clear path to follow .. its just a long walk up a very high hill ... thats SO worth it !

Would love to do this again for both sunrise and sunset photo opportunities !

Anybody not interested in rock scrambling, but chasing similar views serious Mountains Climbers generally achieve after hours of serious CLIMBING .. this is for you ! Awesome !

Not too short, not too hard, not too bad at all! Needed a nap afterwards though.

Fantastic views and well worth the effort.

Solo trip 1 hr 10 mins up, 1 hr down. the track seems to have been recently cleared so it's easy going. the landslides are quite spectacular and a little unnerving. also got a sting from a juvenile giant stinging tree on a knee - watch out! the climb gains about 400-450 metres altitude from the carpark to summit according to my iphone app.

Really great walk with four children (ages 11, 9, 7 and 5). Beautiful weather, wonderful views from the top - perfect spot for afternoon tea! My only concern is crossing the highway with four small children to get from the carpark to the start of the walk (positioned on opposites sides of the Cunningham Highway)...

Catherine on 30 Jun, 2013

Lots of landslides make for incredible views
