Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Steady up hill climb, dry and hot. Views from the top were amazing, it was a very clear day!

just reopened, a great job has been done in clearing the track. the weather had turned and was complete whiteout by the time I reached the top. oh well means I'll just have to do it again

A great walk, and fantastic views from the summit, but keep away from the sheer vertical cliffs. Also watch out for stinging nettles (or trees?) and leeches, but otherwise a great trip, highly recommend it.

We enjoyed the walk...
Pros: Amazing Veiws, Good track (a gentle uphill grade), Diversity of habitat.
Cons: Lantana, Ticks.

Great hike, bit slippery in the rain but enjoyed it all the more.

Did this as part of a Mt Cordeaux, Bare Rock trip solo trip (hey it is all tracks).

Enjoyed this most of three locations visited. Especially as I was the only on Mt Mitchell after I passed the last two parties coming down. View are outstanding along most of the trail. The only annoyance is the noise coming from the highway of the trucks and bus going up and down.

Almost cold as the wind was blowing a bit but pleasant enough.

Very happy with the return from the summit taking a touch over a hour (5.2 km but all down hill). Mt Mitchell is a good walk as the incline is quite mild but it does go up and up.

Sunday 10 June 2012,
A great walk , it tested my general fitness. I suffer from vertigo, and I found the stone steps near the top, and with a sheer drop below and behind, so VERY un-nerving, that I had to crawl. But my daughter companion, was a great help. For the same reason, I stayed back 5 metres from the top with its 3-sided sheer cliff. I defintely would not recommend the final stage after the saddle, for anyone with vertigo. I wonder why a track to the western peak was not built, it is higher, and appears to be less sheer.

Really enjoyed the hike and the views at the summit are well worth the effort.
Love this area-would love to do this hike again soon.
Good Telstra mobile phone coverage from half way up.!

Started just after 7am and had a nice relaxing time on the mountain. It was not too hot, but we still ended up with a few leeches and some ticks. There were also a couple of small birds of prey soaring in the sky at the top.

Great hike with a gradual incline to the summit with some terrific views at some locations. Fantastic 270 degree views from the summit overlooking Main and Macpherson Ranges. Good views of Mount Barney and Moogerah Dam. Watch out for edge drop offs, ticks (lots in summer), snakes and spiders webs at this time of year.

Relax walk also for kids to the top and we only encountered a few people. The parking is limited due to the current roadworks. We had a day with sun and some rain which made the views stunning with different colours of the sky. The summit is a bit creepy with steep cliffs on 3 sides that make you aware how high you are. Loved it!

Started the walk mid morning, temp was refreshing. Track condition was good, few minor fallen branches but still easy to navigate. Got to the peak and view was AWESOME to say the least. Had lunch then started the return descent. Only 3 groups seen on track all day :-)

Parking limited at car park due to Cunninghams Gap roadworks / upgrade.

Well worth the walk, take a camera and maybe bino's as the view on a clear day is AWESOME.

Cheers, Happy Walking :-)

Started out at dawn. Great views from the top. Well worth your time.

A great and easy walk! And so empty, only passed 2 other groups. 3 fit guys did it in under 2 hours easily, although that's not including the hour we spent on the summit trying to fly a kite.

Amazing views on a chill autumn's morning.

Tracks clear all the way, no leeches, very nice walk this time of year.

Walkinghawk on 28 May, 2011

Great walk, the view is outstanding and worth the hike! Took us 2hours 45minutes (2x adults 2x kids 8&10yo). The track was clear. We did see a couple of snakes some lizards and numerous leeches. I would recommend gaitors and getting there early as the parking is very limited due to the current roadworks.

Where the track is exposed on the north eastern side of the mountain weeds have taken over. For approximately 1/3 of the walk the track is covered, still walkable and fairly easy to follow but care is needed. Also long pants would be advisable, my legs are covered in scratches. Overall a good walk.

Beautiful day for a lovely walk. The view out to Moreton was very enjoyable. Vegetation was green and the path under foot was fine. Many small thirsty leeches for those with webbed cross-trainers or running shoes, hungry ticks for the uncareful and lots of overgrown stinging nettles to provide memories for another 12 hours. Overall, however, a very pleasant walk.

A wet walk, clouded in.
