Mount Coolum

Sunshine Coast

Enjoy a steep trek to the summit of one of the Sunshine Coast’s ancient volcanic domes. Created about 26 million years ago, Mount Coolum is a laccolith, formed when a dome-shaped bulge of magma cooled below the Earth’s surface.

A well marked track to walk with steps in sections for easy navigation. There are views on the way up and at the top. This track can get very busy with walkers and runners.

I first climbed this while on school camp back in 1989!!!
This time I brought hubby and the kids.
Great walk that makes you "feel the burn", but well worth is once you get to the top.

This is such a beautiful walk however is ruined by rude people who run up and down the "steps" way. Now i do up one side and down the other. its awesome and definately gives you a work out. My 5 year old loves this one.

I would consider myself a novice at climbing big rocky lumps although I have come across some challenging climbs and I would not consider MT Coolum to be one of them. IT serves more as an exercise routine for locals more than it does a weekend climb and tourist attraction for travelers. It is a great walk to start on if your not very confident and Kids will find it an amazing experience.
I personally was a little disappointed as I reached the top to receive my reward, even though I did appreciate the spanning coast line that was on offer, intensified by the all embracing body of blue water that kissed the shoreline, I was mocked by my preconceptions when my eyes passed over the all encompassing seascape to find an ensemble of white roof tops. I was being a little ambitious and possibly a little sanctimonious, expecting an all natural canvas but I have seen better views from balconies. It is a nice little adventure for a weekend and should not take you more than 60 minutes to tackle the whole thing.

Quite busy for the early morning (6am). Obviously a popular exercise track. But great views and a good little workout.

Walk was great, steps seem to go on forever but the reward is worth it in the end

Spectacular views. Climb itself challenging but not too difficult and suitable to reasonable fitness levels.

Walked up before sunrise, but it started to pour down a bit after we reached the top. Still a cool view though. Rock stairs the whole way up. Get a bit puffed, but an easy enough walk. Took about 30 mins to get to the top.

My GPS tracked 2.3km return. Took us 55mins.

Fairly steep walk up rock steps most of the way. It's a strenuous walk but the views are amazing. You can see most of the Sunshine Coast from the summit. Awesome!

Really pleasant walk up, it was so busy today with everyone out enjoying the beautiful winter sun

Today we climbed Coolum from the western side, up to the top via a track that was more like a water course. Rocky all the way to the top. Down the front side overlooking the ocean and then back up and over and down to the car. Well worth the adventure!

6th and final mountain of the day woo hoo!!!
Fantastic view as always and still very crowded!

julieo on 3 May, 2015

Quite busy route (so close to a residential area that we met many locals who walk or run to the top daily).
Very social climb, met many overseas visitors along with the locals. Took us 30mins to the top, with no hurry at all.
Would love to do it again anytime I'm in the area and need to burn off energy with 40-50 mins to spare.
